About The Integral School

The Integral school is a conscious attempt at evolving newer ways of learning and thinking.

Founded in 2012, The Integral School brings fruition to a long-cherished aspiration to have an integral school as articulated by Sri Aurobindo and based on the deepest principles of Indian spiritual wisdom of Integral Yoga (Sri Aurobindo) The fundamental purpose of the integral school is to create integrated, psychologically resolved, conscious and enlightened human beings. The primary purpose of establishing an integral school is to further the evolutionary design and to facilitate the emergence of a new consciousness in humanity. Every pathway to learning at Integral is interdisciplinary and envisioned as nurturing the spirit of enquiry, exploration, research and self-mastery.
The need for such radical change in education was being felt by many – teachers, parents, educationists, policy makers, thinkers and the only thing everyone seemed to be waiting for was an initiative and thus, came The Integral School into existence. The Integral school is an attempt at evolving newer ways of learning and thinking: an attempt at going beyond structured schooling into the joyful freedom of inner growth. At The Integral School, children learn more by doing, observing and reflecting than by didactic teaching. Project work forms a major tool of learning. Through a single project the child often trains the body, mind and intellect, awakens the psychic being (soul-being), and learns language, mathematics, science and other topical or need (of the child) based subjects. The Integral School makes a conscious attempt at widening and deepening the scope of school and schooling. Non-conformity to social standards and conventions, emphasis on built-pedagogy (physical space influencing learning), a shift from pedagogies of discipline and conformity to freedom and choice would then be the defining characteristics of an Integral school. The Integral school, in its holistic and integrated vision would work towards an integration of life, for the children and facilitators alike.

Purpose

Awakening and evoking the true being, the psychic (chaitya purusa, the soul being) presence within, and through that process, bringing about a progressive unfolding of the whole person is raison d’etre of The Integral School

Objectives

Integral Education: A context

Societies across globe live today in an inter-connected network, intertwined with technologies, cultures, languages, economics, politics etc. Such trends affect the future of education as schools continue to function within these eco-systems. Just as the world now comes more closer it also becomes more vulnerable. In the middle of all technological and scientific advances, we also see propaganda, unrest, misinformation, security and ethical challenges in almost all the domains of life. There is an existential challenge, the earth can no longer continue to provide for everyone at the rate at which we are going. There is a sense of cynicism about the future of humanity, and it is widespread and intense.

In a deeper sense we are responsible, and we are all creators and forerunners of our future. What we are doing today is determining in profound ways what shall exist on this planet in generations to come. And thus, the way we educate our young today will determine, in perhaps the most direct manner the way life will be lived in the years to come, for it is our education that moulds most significantly our beliefs, attitudes and culture. If we must create a new future, we must first create a new consciousness in our youth. This means that the education of the future will have to be a consciousness education, an education nurturing the growth of consciousness.

Mainstream and Integral Education: Contrasting goals

Mainstream Education

It’s all about stuffing in information.

Integral Education

It’s all about drawing out what is within.

Education

Mainstream Education

Conventions of the society, culture, family, teacher-experts, books, environment.

Integral Education

The psychic being (soul) around which the mind, vital and the physical gets formed.

Basis of formation of ‘personality’

Mainstream Education

Promotes conformity and imposed discipline

Integral Education

Conducive for exploration and discovery

Physical Environment

Mainstream Education

Works towards a pre-set agenda, pre-set curriculum, pre-set expectations and feeds the corporate agenda.

Integral Education

It is a movement and a facilitation towards realizing capacity for self-exceeding and perfection, towards autonomy and freedom, towards creating the individual and the race creative and evolutionary.

Main Purpose

Mainstream Education

A teacher is a task master, an expert concerned with subjects and know-how, helps student to clear exams.

Integral Education

A teacher is a helper and a guide, s-he only suggest and perfects the instrument of knowledge.

Teacher

Mainstream Education

One sided emphasis on propositional knowledge and logico-deductive; physical development is confined to games.

Integral Education

Purification, training and perfection of the instruments-the mind, the body, the vital; The psychic being as the governor of life.

Focus

Mainstream Education

All about pedagogy i.e., how to teach. Child is a passive participant and gives in to hierarchy. Teacher centric and syllabus dependent.

Integral Education

All about epistemology i.e., how to access knowledge, knowing about knowing Child is an active participant in his or her own learning process. Learning centric and need (of the child) dependent.

Learning Approach

Mainstream Education

Standardized, according to timetable, schedules, and authority supersede everything and is didactic in approach, no room for dialogue and discussion.

Integral Education

Dialogue forms the basis of education delivery; learning is organic and highly personalized

Education Delivery

This was indeed the basis of India’s traditional spiritual education and we feel that the new age demands a return to a similar paradigm even more strongly and urgently.

For us, it was and will never be about how to teach subjects, our concerns and our focus is on how to integrate the inner life of a child with the outer world, how do we provide an environment that nurtures curiosity about the inner subjective world as much as the outer objective world. The greatest gift that we as facilitators and parents can give to our children is the love for learning.

People @ The Integral School

The Integral School is led by people who are deeply committed to bring about the needed change in the way we bring up our children, the way we educate them and the way we school them. It is an attempt by a small group of people to not allow children to follow a certain herd or to become industrial moulds or to follow some corporate agenda or any social convention as much as it is to allow them to grow into their own inner beauty and allow them the freedom to choose to evolve in the light of their own svabhava (innate nature).

The aim is simple, to create an integral learning commune where like-minded people can come together and take the school to its next evolutionary stage.

“Our daughter Viswada is 7 year old and has been in integral school for about 3 years. School environment resembles an extension of home. The activities at school are balanced with sports, academic learning, field trips and projects. Learning in the school is driven by facilitation rather than active teaching; this develops thinking skills in children. Viswada loves the food at school. Physical, mental and emotional development of the children are well taken care of at the school by their loving facilitators.”

"This is one of the best schools to evolve and groom the children. Every query of the child is cleared from the roots and with lots of patiences. The school emphasises on holistic education with focus on identifying and solving problems from different subjects. Marks and ranks find no place in this school. We feel very comfortable and are glad that we chose this school."
